Upon arriving in Gévaudan, Fronsac and Mani encounter a tense social atmosphere, with the local nobility and church attempting to maintain control while rumors of the beast spread panic. As Fronsac examines the bodies, he concludes that the killings could not have been committed by any known animal, raising suspicions of a man-made or manipulated creature.

While conducting the investigation, Fronsac becomes entangled with two women: Marianne, a noblewoman, and Sylvia, a mysterious courtesan. At the same time, he and Mani face increasing resistance from local forces who have their own secrets and interests in keeping the truth hidden. Political intrigue, superstition, and betrayal begin to surface as the beast continues to kill.
