At first, Sophie is frightened, but she soon realizes that the BFG is kind, gentle, and nothing like the other giants in his land. While the BFG catches and delivers dreams to children, the other giants—much bigger and meaner—eat humans, especially children.

As their friendship grows, Sophie encourages the BFG to stand up to the bully giants. She learns about his dream-catching work and the magical world he lives in, but also sees how sad and lonely he is because of the other giants’ cruelty.
